Safe Shopping
April 2014
I read an article about how to be safe while shopping even when you shop in a mall. The article mentioned that too many people get a false sense of security in a mall, because there are so many shoppers, it is in an enclosed building, there are security staff and that they are not on the streets going from store to store. There have been recent serious attacks by criminals in shopping malls. The following is a list of tips on how to keep safe while shopping.
- Be aware of your environment, where the security guards are and if there are security cameras around
- If you are alone, do consider walking to the mall from the parking lot amongst other shoppers
- If you are forced to park away from the mall entrance, try to park in a spot that is
well lit and/or has heavy traffic be other shoppers
- Report any suspicious looking people or behavior to center management. You may save a possible disaster
- Try and avoid carrying large sums of money. Use credit or debit cards instead
- Keep your handbag close to the front of your body. Be mindful of valuables like your cell phone, car keys and sunglasses at all times
- It is advisable that men keep their wallets in the front pocket of their trousers as back pockets are easier to pickpocket or rip off
- Never leave valuable in your shopping cart, especially when unattended
- Consolidate purchases into 1 or 2 large shopping bags so that it is easier to keep track of everything
- Purchase your most expensive gifts last
- When trying on clothes in the change room, remember to watch your own belongings
- Avoid restrooms, tucked away in a back area of a mall. Rather use one near the food court or other well trafficed area
- Always accompany your kids to the restroom
- Do not use the arcade games or a toy shop as a baby sitter/children should not be left unsupervised
- It is useful to show kids who the security guards and explain to your kids where to go for help should they get lost
- Have your keys ready before you
approach your vehicle and be aware of your surroundings. If you see a suspicious looking person around, do not approach your vehicle
- Be aware of vehicles around you upon exit. Ensure that you are not being followed. If you suspect you are being followed drive to the nearest police station or gas station and ask for help
Now quickly and easily navigate to your next destination.
